Guys. I. have. had. one. of. the. best. teaching. days. ever!
First, to review for their test on subtracting fractions with different denominators, I had them make posters and practice teaching it to others, and then I had them go to a 3rd grade classroom, get into groups and teach them how to do it in 10 minutes.
Later, I asked them to write in their journal about their experiences! This is what they shared:
1) It was frustrating to teach those 3rd graders, they weren't listening to me!
2) When the students listened to me and understand, it was so fun to teach. I want to be a substitute teacher when I grow up.
3) I realized I had to go slow and talk slow.
4) I realized teaching isn't telling.
So incredible, huh?!
Then, I told them I was starting a "Joy" Journal (which I am, and I got the idea in Relief Society). I shared with them some things in my Joy Journal: It brings me joy when my students are happy, do and understand their homework, tell me lessons are fun, etc.
So we were doing a writing activity, and I told them, I know it's boring for me to model this for you, but I promise it will make it clearer. One student shouted out (this comment probably would have been better if he had raised his hand): No, this lesson is fun! I asked, "Really?" He said, "Well, kinda but I just wanted to bring you joy." What a sweetheart!
We also practiced jump roping after we read a story on jump roping and we said the important ideas of the story while we jump roped. Fun.
I love being a teacher!
