Honesty

So. You probably have read my last few posts, and thought, "Gee, why is she a teacher? All she does is complain about it all the time." Well. The Truth is, I love teaching. It CAN be frustrating, very. I imagine it's similar (NOT THE SAME) as being a mom, in the sense that there are frustrating times, because you are trying to teach these kids to be the best darn kids possible and they resist it sometimes! Also, because, you have to take time to treasure their personalities and the humor in life.

Today, we had a little lesson on honesty. I have had students doing "sneaky" things lately--passing notes (Yes, I did it in school too but that doesn't make it right!!), copying homework, cheating on tests, doing something naughty when I'm turned around or not in the room. So we talked about what it means to be honest and dishonest.

We talked about how being dishonest doesn't just mean, "Not telling the truth". It can also be when you are hiding something bad, when you don't tell something you SHOULD tell.

I told them about a few scenarios, that have happened in our class, and had them write on their whiteboards whether those actions were "dishonest" or "dishonest". We talked about the consequences for both choices. We also discussed that dishonest actions make people think you are a dishonest person and other people lose their trust in you.

So after ALL this, I sent a boy and a girl off to the bathroom. I heard talking in the hallway (which I talked to them about because they're supposed to be going straight to the bathroom and quickly say hi to friends they might see), I thought, "Oh boy, after that whole lesson, they're still being dishonest" and opened my door to see what was going on.

I saw ANOTHER classes boys talking in the hallway. I proudly saw MY student running out of the bathroom saying, "Mrs. Hancock! I came straight from the bathroom! I was being honest!" I smiled and said, "I know, and you did a wonderful job."

So cute.

And so for those of you who MAYBE had your doubts: I have the best job.

  1. Girl, teaching is HARD! I teach 15 2-year-olds only for 3 hours each morning, and it makes me INSANE! They're crazy, stinky, and challenging.. but sweet, loving, funny, and wonderful. The good days/moments make the bad ones worth it (usually :P). Miss you!
