So, I've always been a little grossed out when people post all the details of their labor and delivery. Until I did it. Then, I thought, I just gave birth to a human child! I am a rockstar and everyone should hear about it! So, hypocrite and all, here is my story:
We went to a growth appointment with the perinatologist yesterday afternoon. She said he grew the bare minimum but she was still worried about him and his Doppler increased which showed resistance in the placenta. And whenever my uterus contracted, his heart rate dropped. So with those three things combined, she said, "You need to go and deliver your baby now," I burst into tears because I was so shocked. The thoughts in my head were 'oh my gosh, I'm not ready' and 'oh my gosh, I hope he doesn't die.'
So, we went up to labor and delivery and they started me on medicine to soften my cervix so it would dilate. It worked and my water broke right after. Then my body started contractions on its own. This happened all through the night and I tried to put off getting the epidural. Needless to say, neither Josh nor I got any rest. Finally, I got to the point where the contractions made me want to throw up, so I got the epidural. But shortly after, they started noticing that the contractions were getting more severe and his heart rate was dropping and not coming back up. So even though Josh had left to get some breakfast, I had to call him and say, "Come back, we're having an emergency c-section."
Scared, but thankfully not crying (miracle), we went into the room and once my OB got there, we did a c-section. It was short and I was shaking the whole time, but it was all worth it when I heard Nolan's cry. I didn't get to see him, because they had to stitch me up, but Josh got to follow him to the NICU.
He's there now, hooked up to the lung machine. He's doing really well, although he became very agitated when they tried to move his position. They said if he continues to do well we can take him home next week.
So far, he looks and acts normal, despite the fact that he's only 4 lbs and 7 oz., but the geneticist hasn't seen him yet and they might do an MRI. He's not out of the woods yet, so we're still praying.
From his whole pregnancy and birth, we just know he's our little miracle. We also found out that it should be hard for us to have children because I seem to have only one working ovary. And apparently my uterus kind of only half works, so that's why he was so small. Needless to say, he is the only Christmas present we need this year.
Despite what the future holds, we are thankful for our blessings today and we love our little guy.
